In professional sports, coaches are on the hotseat. It is always, "What have you done for me lately?" Christians need to consider not only what Jesus did for them on the cross, but what He is doing for them today as their High Priest.
It is amazing that people want what Jesus did on the cross, but not what He wants to do today by transforming their lives into the image of Christ.
We liked His "coaching" when it made us victorious over the penalty of death and sin, but we are less excited about His "coaching" when He is trying to make us victorious over sin in a practical sense.
Melchizedek Was Greater Than Abraham (Gen. 14)
He is both King & Priest
King of righteousness
King of peace
He blesses Abraham
The lesser is blessed of the greater
Abraham recognizes Melchizedek's authority
Melchizedek receives tithes of Abraham
Melchizedek Was Greater Than Aaron
His genealogy was different
In a book of genealogies, he has none
He has no beginning or ending historically speaking
Christophony or not?
No. He is being compared to the Levitical priesthood in which they had to prove their lineage
This does not fit a Christophony
The Law was imperfect (v. 11-14)
The Law would cease (v. 15-17)
It became inoperative
It was weak and ineffective
Sacrifices only "rolled back" sin
Blood of bulls and goats could not save
The new order brings a better hope (v. 18-19)
Melchizedek Has a Greater Oath
Oath was made by God
He made an oath with Abraham
He made an oath through Jesus
Men take oaths before taking office. God made an oath for Jesus when Christ took office
Jesus is our guarantee
Sins are forgiven
That God will do everything that He has promised
As our representative, He makes sure that we meet the conditions also
Jesus ushers in a better covenant
Last will and testament
He guarantees it is followed because of His resurrection
He never dies like the Levitical priests
Saves us to the "uttermost"
Not "from" the uttermost, though that is a valid truth
"to" the uttermost means completely
Blameless, eternal high priest
Better character
Endless life
Without sin
Key to Understanding Hebrews
There are two different priesthoods
Melchizedek type
Levitical type
Both of these priesthoods are patterned after the true priesthood in heaven
The Melchizedek type is better than the Levitical type
Jesus offers the real sacrifice in the heavenly sanctuary of which the Levitical sanctuary was a type
The Levitical priesthood has been done away with
It was temporary until the real sacrifice came (Jesus)
There was no Levitical priesthood before Moses and there is none after Jesus
We are urged to put behind us the Judaistic system and to embrace a better system under Christ
