Full of Truth and Love or True Lies

  1. Background
    1. Author: Apostle John
      1. the son of thunder, Mark 3:17
      2. disciple whom Jesus loved
      3. inner circle
      4. apostle of love
      5. "elder" = John was in later years the pastor of the Ephesian church
    2. Written around 85-95 AD
    3. 1st epistle theme is "love"
    4. 2nd epistle the theme is "truth"
    5. "elect Lady" Two views
      1. an individual lady whom John knew
      2. figurative designation for the church
  2. We need to know the truth (Jesus), believe the truth, and walk in the truth
  3. Exegesis of the introduction:
    1. "with us forever" = eternal security
    2. "dwelleth in us" = indwelling of the Holy Spirit
    3. "in truth and love" = these two concepts are perfectly balanced in God. Jesus was "full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)
    4. The love of God alone did not save us. It took the mercy and truth of God also. God is holy. Need Rom. 3:26 as well as John 3:16.
    5. It is not enough to believe, we must believe the truth.
  4. Key Concept: We are not to "entertain" false doctrine.
  5. Truth and Love Balanced
    1. v. 4 "walking in truth" = continuing, practicing in the present and future
    2. v. 6 "walk in love"
    3. Truth predominates love, not vice versa. Love is defined by truth. Truth is not defined by love (i.e. situation ethics)
      1. Joseph Fletcher and Situation Ethics
      2. Truth precedes moral decisions.
      3. cp. John 14:15 "If you love me, keep my commandments." True love is wrapped up in obedience.
    4. Christ’s law is on a higher plane than the 10 commandments
  6. Truth In Practice
    1. Anti-Christ (against Christ and instead of Christ)
      1. denies the incarnation
      2. denies the deity of Christ
      3. denies the truth by watering down doctrine, ecumenical (doctrine divides they say, so let’s forget it)
    2. Examples of Anti-Christ
      1. John’s day it was the gnostics or gnosticism
      1. Our Day
      1. proagw = to go before, to go beyond. The gnostics claimed a special knowledge that the rest didn’t have. They went beyond the doctrine of Christ. We must be careful not to go beyond the teachings of Scripture. We shouldn’t lag behind or add to it.
      2. Doctrine of Christ: the fundamentals
      3. Doctrinal purity and Separation: don’t be a co-laborer with those who are anti-Christ. Be careful who you send money to and make allegiances with.
