Faith is Better
Text: Hebrews 11
Introduction:
- Faith vs. Law
- Externals vs. Internals
- Inside out vs. outside in
- Notice five key concepts about faith
Faith is based on evidence
Many have suggested a leap of faith
This is neo-orthodoxy
This is man thinking that faith is illogical or unreasonable but so is materialism
Evidence for faith
Creation (v. 4)
Conscience
The presence of good and evil (morality)
Resurrection
Bible's historicity
Faith is necessary to please God
Have faith in Who He is
Trust His wisdom and plan
Trust His goodness and greatness
Have faith to accomplish His will (see examples in the chapter)
Have faith to believe that He will reward obedience
Even when that obedience is harmful in this life
Martyrs
Suffering for the stand you take
Even when we get no reward in this life
Faith can be mixed with disobedience or self-doubt
Note the examples in this list
Samson stands out as the best example of disobedience and faith being mixed
Note that Samson suffered greatly for his disobedience
This is not to condone or soften the effects of disobedience, but to encourage you if you have failed that you can still be used
Gideon
He doubted himself and his abilities
He needed more outward evidence than some
Faith has varying degrees
It is like a muscle that can be strengthened or weakened
Using is strengthens it
Having a pillar fall weakens it
Mk. 9 "I believe, help thou mine unbelief"
Faith does not necessarily equal earthly success
Many were martyred
Many suffered financial ruin
Many were homeless
Yet these all had faith and will receive a greater resurrection
Be careful of how you measure success in the spiritual realm
Size is not an indicator of faith or faithfulness
Affluence is not an indicator of faith or faithfulness
Faith is better than Law
It is the only way we could be justified
We are all Lawbreakers
Therefore, even if we remained perfect from now on, we would still be guilty of breaking the law at some time
It is the only way to have victory over sin
The law gives us knowledge of sin, but no way to break the power of sin
Faith is the pathway to overcoming sin
It is the only way to please God
Works do not please Him in the sense that they do anything to reconcile us to Him
It pleased God to sacrifice his Son (Is. 53)
Works for the Christian do please God
It is not sacrifices and offerings, but a contrite heart that pleases God
He wants a change from the inside out
Outward rituals cannot permanently change the heart
