Calvinism vs. Arminianism
Goes back to Augustine
Augustine vs. Pelagius
Pelagius
Man did not inherit sin nature: Morally neutral
Adam’s sin was a bad example
No internal work of soul needed by God. Just need "grace" on the external
You could grow until sinless
Augustine
Need divine grace on soul to avoid sin
Man has options, but they are all sinful
Calvinism Today vs. Historical Calvinism
Today it is possible to be called a "Calvinist" and yet reject all 5 tenets.
ex. Curtis Hutson; Jan. 8, 1999 issue of Sword of the Lord
Some have equated eternal security with Calvinism
This is an improper analogy
Those who reject both Calvinism and Arminianism prefer to be called biblicists (Calvinists and Arminians would also consider themselves biblicists)

Three Calvinistic Views
Supralapsarianism
The decree to save (elect) some and reprobate others
The decree to create both the elect and the reprobate
The decree to permit the fall of both the elect and the reprobate
The decree to provide salvation only for the elect
Infralapsarianism
The decree to create human beings
The decree to permit the fall
The decree to elect some and reprobate others
The decree to provide salvation only for the elect
Sublapsarianism
The decree to create human beings
The decree to permit the fall
The decree to provide salvation sufficient for all
The decree to save some and reprobate others
Arminianism
The decree to appoint Jesus as Savior
All who repent and believe shall be saved
God has granted sufficient grace to enable all to believe
God "predestines" those who He foreknows will be saved
Big Difference between Calvinism and Arminianism
Is the decree to elect based on God’s sovereignty or on His foreknowledge of events?
Strong Arminianism Verses
Romans 8:28-29
1 Peter 1:2
Strong Calvinism Verses
Ephesians 1:5-11
Romans 9:15-16
The difference is not eternal security, but the definition of election
Terms Used
Chose, Chosen
John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me …
Question: Salvation or Service
Ephesians 1:4
Elect
Various passages speaking of the elect
1 Peter 2:4 Jesus is chosen (elected), not for salvation, but for a work
Three Types of Election
Personal
National
Vocational
Foreknow - Refers primarily to persons
Romans 8:29
Romans 11:2
1 Peter 1:20
Foreknowledge
Acts 2:23
1 Peter 1:2
Predestinate - Determine beforehand, not necessarily to cause to happen. Refers primarily to acts or events
Romans 8:29-30
Ephesians 1:5-11
Foreordain: Broad term
Predestine: Salvation Reprobation
Election: Salvation
Note: With God, no time, before, first, etc.
Things we Know
Sovereignty of God
Responsibility (not free will) of Man
Unlimited Atonement

2 Peter 3:9
Heb. 2:9
* I John 2:1-2
Isa. 53:6
1 Tim. 2:6
Possibility that some Jesus died for are not saved
Rom. 14:15
2 Pet.2:1
Offer is to All
Matt 11:28
Great Commission
Initiative is God’s
"No one comes except the Father draw him"
John 16:8 "Spirit reproveth…"
In one sense all have been "drawn"
"If I be lifted up I will draw all men to myself"
"Grace of God that bringeth salvation has appeared to all men"
His will
God is working everything according to His will (Eph. 1:11)
What is His will?
John 6:40 "…everyone will believe…"
Lu. 13:3, 5 "repent…"
Repentance before Regeneration, not vice versa
What of the 5 Points of Calvinism?
T: Depends on your definition of total depravity
If you mean total inability without regeneration, then no
If you mean totally sinful in every part of your being, then yes
U: Depends on your understanding of election
If you mean that God chose who would be saved without any consideration of foreknowledge and the condition of belief, then no.
If you mean my election something other, then the point is moot, or not applicable.
Election is conditioned on belief!
L: Definitely not true
There are many who still want to hold to Calvinism but who reject this tenet (sublapsarianists)
Too many verses that give the universal nature of the atonement
It does not necessarily lead to a universalistic view of salvation
I: Not true
Many Scriptures where people resisted God
While Calvinists make a distinction between resisting God and resisting His saving grace, I think the distinction is artificial
God’s grace (saving grace) has appeared to all men. Therefore, it has either been accepted or rejected.
Verses:
Acts 7:51, 2 Ti. 3:8
"hardened their hearts…"
P: Depends on your view of perseverance
Some make a distinction between perseverance and preserverance
Some define perseverance as the only possibility for the saved
We do not keep ourselves saved, God preserves us.
If you define perseverance as eternal security, then yes, we believe in perseverance
Conclusion:
God desires all men to be saved
God has drawn all men through these means
Lifting up Jesus on the cross
Sending the Holy Spirit to convict men of sin
Revealing Himself in creation
All men have sufficient light to be saved
Jesus came to save the lost (which is everyone), not just the elect.
The invitation for anyone to come to God is genuine
Man has sufficient light to come.
If a man comes to God in repentance God will save Him and regenerate that person causing him to be born again.
