Better Than Moses
Text: He. 3-4
Introduction:
- Is it better to live in a house and keep if for someone else or to own the house?
- Review (Cp. 1:1-3 to 12:25)
- God wants us to hear the word spoken by Jesus the Son
- Jesus is better than the prophets, so we should listen to Him
- Jesus is better than the angels, so we should hear Him
- Jesus is better than Moses, so we should listen to Him
Christ's Person is Greater Than Moses
Key phrases
"Holy Brethren"
Indicates that the readers were saved
They were possessors, not just professors
"Partakers of the heavenly calling"
Word used in Luke 5:7 and translated "partners"
There it referred to men who were partners in fishing
We are partners in fishing for men
One plants, one waters, God gives the increase
One gives, one goes, one reaps, one sows
"confession"
"to say the same thing" "to agree with"
Twice we are told to "hold fast" our confession (4:14; 10:23)
"consider carefully"
Can't make a quick-fix profession
Takes consideration, examination, consider thoroughly
Jesus is THE Apostle and Great High Priest
Moses was not the High Priest
Moses was AN apostle, but not THE apostle
"Apostle" is "one who is commissioned"
Jesus is the final WORD on the matter, sent by God
As the Apostle Jesus represents GOD to MAN
As the High Priest He represents MAN to GOD
Both Moses and Jesus were faithful to their calling
Faithfulness is better giftedness
Dependability better than ability
Greater in His Ministry
"house"
Refers to the people of God, not a material building
Moses ministered to God's people in the OT, the Jews
Jesus ministers to God's people today, the church
Their relation to the "house"
Moses was a servant in the house
The word "servant" is not one of the normal words used
It is only used of Moses in the NT
Refers to serving out of love or devotion
Jesus is a Son over the house
Moses is the creature, Jesus the Creator
"if we hold fast"
Not referring to the possibility of losing salvation
"Since we hold fast"
"holding fast" is proof that we are part of the house
Those who remain firm until the end show that they are truly saved
Those who drop out show that they were not genuinely saved to begin with
Can of Worms: perseverance and preserverance
We know that we are saved by faith
We know that we are kept by faith
We know that a person who is genuinely born again is eternally secure
We know that no whoremonger, adulterer, etc. has any part in the kingdom of God
This provides a conundrum, "What do we do with those who profess to be saved but who fall away or fall into sin?"
Possible answers
They never were genuinely saved (1 Jo. 2:19)
Monroe Parker "If we could get half the church members saved, we would see a great revival. In fact, I think if we could get half of the preachers in America converted, we would see a mighty revival."
Dale Burden: "Anyone with any spiritual maturity and discernment,..knows most church members today are not saved. Dr. W. A. Criswell, famous SBC pastor of the huge First Baptist Church in Dallas, said...that he would be surprised to meet 25% of his members in heaven. Bob Gray, long-time pastor of the big Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, said several years ago that probably 75% of those he baptized were not saved."
Dr. B. R. Lakin: 75% of those attending bible-believing churches are lost.
A. W. Tozer: "Among evangelical churches probably no more than one out of ten know anything experientially about the new birth."
Billy Graham: During his early years declared that at least 85% of church members are not saved.
Gallup Poll says that 74% of Americans claim a born again experience
It is possible for a Christian to sin, even badly, but he will not continue in that sin
Lessons from this
Assurance comes not from belief in eternal security, but by obedience (1 John 3:19-21)
Those who live in sin cannot be smug in their confession because a true confession will cause a change
If there has been no evidence of change, then there can be no assurance
Your continued profession does not make you saved, but it does prove you are saved
Moses vs. Jesus
Ethical systems
Moses gave us the Mosaic Law
Jesus gave us the Sermon on the Mount
Emphasis
Mosaic Law: conduct
Sermon on the Mount: character
Unbelief (He. 3:19)
Comes from an evil heart
Causes us to depart from the faith
Earlier we were warned to not "drift"
Exhortation helps us to stay true
Sin causes us to depart through deceitfulness
Cp. Eph. 6:11
Promises one thing but gives another
David's greatest sin was not Bathsheba, but unbelief
Problem with doubt: It leads to other sins
For Israel it led to the golden calf
For David it led to numbering the people
For Israel it led to wandering in the wilderness
"Confidence"
When first saved, we had confidence in our profession
It is possible to lose confidence in our profession
A difficulty causes us to question
Persecution causes us to question
Failure causes us to question
Illus. Mark 9:14f "help thou mine unbelief"
Greater Rest
Rest equals completeness. God rested when He completed creation.
- OT Illustration
- Canaan
- Not a picture of salvation, but of victorious Christian life
- It has battles, wars, etc. which are not indicative of heaven
- Salvation is pictured by the blood on the doorposts
- Three locations
- Sinner without the blood
- Wilderness in disobedience and unbelief
- Canaan of obedience
Two rests in the OT
God's Sabbath rest
Israel's Canaan rest
Two rests in the NT
Salvation rest (rest from our works for salvation)
Submission rest (victory in the Lord)
There is a future rest in heaven
Only time that this word is used
Refers to all battles and labors being ended (at least those related to sin)
Oxymoron
Labor to enter into rest
Irishman who said he'd fight to have peace
Israel as an illustration (Psalm 95:7-11)
God revealed Himself in great miracles, and they still did not believe Him
Demonstrates that miracles themselves will not MAKE people believe
The key is how they are moved by the WORD of God
Their problem was their heart
We are not saved by keeping our confession, but we keep our confession because we are saved
They "departed" from the living God
The word "apostasy"
Only time used in Hebrews
Be diligent (v. 11)
To obey the Word
To remember God's judgment
To remember our High Priest
"Today"
"Discerner"
Critic
The Word should criticize us (used in the classical sense)
We should not criticize the Word
"Boldly"
Not brazenly, but fearfully
Come with "freedom of speech"
We should feel comfortable bringing any problem to Jesus
He understands, even without sin
