Text: Eph. 6:10-13
Introduction:
Contrary to popular opinion, we are in a battle, not a game. We are waging eternal war for the souls of men.
No conflict in your life then you have retreated from the front lines
Not a job for couch potatos, entertaining saints
Angels fought battles
Dan. 10:13
Jude 9
"Finally" = the conclusion where Paul is tying everything together.
He has told us how to believe (doctrine)
He has told us how to behave (duty)
Now he is telling us that the enemy is going to attack both of those areas.
He is trying to infiltrate the ranks to spread false doctrine (Acts 20:29-30)
He is going to try to entice us to leave off sound living
Know our Power Source
"Be strong"
Comes from
endunamousqe
Have dynamite power
God is not in the business of making weaklings.
We are weak in our flesh and our own strength
"Without me ye can do nothing"
"With God all things are possible."
"in the Lord."
It is not how much strength, but the source of our strength (Phil. 4:13)
God is the source. Prayer, obedience and the Word are the transmission lines
John 15: We must abide in Christ if we are to produce spiritual fruit
Know your Equipment
Illus. To be an effective carpenter, computer programmer, etc. you must know your equipment
"Put on…"
Suggests putting it on and keeping it on
We are not in a part-time battle
No army fights part of the time.
Removing the armor can be spiritually fatal
Constant battle
Examples
Put on the new man
Put on and take off
"Whole armor"
Gk. word
panoplian
from which we get "panoply."
We are susceptible is any part is missing
Illus. The Hobbit the dragon was invincible except for a missing piece of armored scale on his underbelly.
Illus. Achilles had one vulnerable spot, his heel
"That ye may be able to stand"
Suggests that if you don’t put on the armor, you won’t be able to stand. You can’t do it in your own strength
‘
isthmi
= when used in a military context refers to holding a critical position
Stand true to the fundamentals
Stand true to godly living
Need men and women who will take a stand rather than a back seat; have courage, rather than cowardice; live by principle, rather than feeling.
Know our Enemy
Satan
The enemy has many different names.
Devil
means "accuser," because he accuses God’s people day and night before the throne of God (Rev. 12:7-11).
Satan
means "adversary," because he is the enemy of God.
called the tempter (Matt. 4:3),
murderer
liar (John 8:44)
"the god of this age" (2 Cor. 4:4)
The enemy’s comparisons
compared to a lion (1 Peter 5:8),
compared to a serpent (Gen. 3:1; Rev. 12:9),
compared to an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:13-15)
His tactics
"wiles" =
meqodia
from which we get methods
Means literally "schemes"
Illus. Wyle E. Coyote
He doesn’t play fair
He has a plan (method)
Infiltrates the ranks with false teachers
Leavens the lump with immorality (1 Co. 5)
Attacks from without and within
Deception
Angel of light
Deceived Eve with half-truths
His History
Anointed Cherub who fell
Archangel in charge of one-third of the angelic host
Pride was His downfall
Been God’s adversary since
His ultimate destination is the lake of fire
Power of Satan
It is limited. He is not omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent like God
He is more powerful, cunning, knowledgeable than we are
He is well organized as is evident from v. 12
He knows our weaknesses
Satan’s army (principalities, powers, etc.)
Description of the organized levels of the forces of evil and the demonic power of the "heavenlies."
Satan is organized like an army for battle
We must be organized
Disorganization does not win in the world or in the spiritual realm
God is a God of order
Defeating demons
No magic formula
Hollywood’s exorcisms (The Exorcist) are unbiblical
Some think that by saying the name "Jesus" or by mentioning "the blood of Jesus" that you can defeat Satan.
"in Jesus" describes not a verbal formula, but a mode of living
"in the blood" we defeat the power of sin in our lives and the penalty of sin
Resistance is the key to defeating Satan (James 4:7)
Thoughts on Demon "Possession"
It cannot happen to Christians
Most of popular beliefs are misconceptions
Know the Battlefield
"Not against flesh and blood."
In the original it is "blood and flesh"
Not a natural, physical battle
Why natural abilities are insufficient
Why we shouldn’t be fighting people
Why we should be praying more, promoting less
"we wrestle"
hand to hand combat
individual war as well as a corporate battle
"in high places"
same phrase as "in the heavenlies"
our blessings are in the spiritual realm, but so is the battle
Satan fights us here in order to ground us and prevent us from soaring into the heavenlies where our blessing are
